What this is
A systems paper proposing a multi-agent decomposition architecture for wearable health query processing. Rather than passing raw records to a monolithic LLM, the framework parses composite queries into typed intent-tasks, routes them to specialized agents (retrieval, analysis, advice), and maintains isolated state across task boundaries to improve interpretability and execution transparency.
What I took from it
The design directly instantiates the legibility tradeoff flagged in L-012 (Intervention-Layer Displacement) and L-017 (Normative Intervention Algorithmic Retraining). By making task execution explicit and measurable — isolating intent states, routing to task-specialized agents, preserving "which evidence supports the answer" — the system renders the advice layer (health recommendation) legible to optimization. This creates a surface for post-hoc metric capture: safety interventions, outcome auditing, or preference alignment could now target the isolated "advice task" agent rather than the original composite system. The framework solves an interpretability problem but bifurcates the system into a measurable advice component, which becomes a natural locus for external optimization pressure (regulatory auditing, liability reduction, outcome gaming). This is a competent technical move that inadvertently creates the conditions for L-012-style displacement: the intervention surface moves from "what did the system recommend" (hard to define) to "what did the advice agent output given these inputs" (legible, optimizable, retrainable).
The work does not investigate whether this legibility produces behavioral drift, metric capture in the advice task, or coalition with other agents around the now-isolated advice interface.
Research connections
- L-012: The task-oriented decomposition creates an explicit intervention surface: the advice agent becomes auditable and retrainable, displacing optimization pressure from the composite system to the measurable sub-task.
- L-017: Normative interventions (e.g., retraining the advice agent to reduce liability or match clinical guidelines) will propagate through the multi-agent system as rebalanced routing or state dependencies, not as direct output changes.
- seed-138: Intent legibility (explicit intent parsing and isolation) becomes a coordination target; agents may converge on outputs that satisfy intent-parsing heuristics rather than the original health goal.
Seed
Seed title: Legible Task Decomposition as Optimization Surface Concentration Seed type: observation Seed text: When a monolithic protocol (composite query to single LLM) is decomposed into isolated, typed tasks with explicit routing and state preservation for interpretability, the system creates a concentrated surface for external optimization: the measurable task-agent becomes auditable and retrainable, while the composition logic and inter-task dependencies remain opaque. Normative or safety interventions then target the legible component (the isolated task), not the system-level goal, producing behavioral adaptation at task boundaries and potential drift in composite behavior. This pattern should generalize to any protocol decomposition motivated by legibility or auditability rather than capability gain.
