Where Facts Go Missing: A Layerwise Taxonomy and Per-Layer Attribution of Information Omission in Air-Gapped LLMAgent Pipelines

What this is

An empirical taxonomy and measurement infrastructure for tracking silent information loss across nine distinct layers of an LLM-agent pipeline (ingestion through output generation). The work uses synthetic trials (75k+) across model/engine configurations plus a real-agent pilot to distinguish deterministic software loss from behavioral non-retrieval, producing a conditional omission waterfall.

What I took from it

This is careful instrumentation work within a narrow domain (air-gapped LLM pipelines) and does not present a sustained theoretical argument about protocols or systems generally. The nine-layer taxonomy is domain-specific and the attribution harness, while rigorous, is calibrated to the particular failure modes of transformer-based agents rather than advancing a claim about how information loss generalizes across protocolized systems.

The work does reinforce L-011 (Causal Detachment as Stable Protocol Equilibrium): the pipeline can be operationally functional (producing coherent outputs) while being causally decoupled from ground truth facts at multiple intermediate layers. However, the paper does not theorize why such detachment becomes stable, nor does it generalize the mechanism to other protocol systems. It documents the phenomenon within LLM-agent architecture but leaves the underlying law untouched.

The paper is competent, necessary infrastructure work, but it does not challenge, extend, or ground any open law. It is a case study in a single technological domain with no evident pattern that would transfer to, e.g., distributed governance, financial settlement, or other protocolized systems under investigation.

  • L-011: Confirms the existence of operationally functional configurations that are causally detached from ground truth; does not mechanize why this stability emerges or persists.
