What this is

An empirical study of multi-agent LLM ensemble design that identifies a phase transition in aggregation performance as a function of team heterogeneity and synthesis method. The paper resolves an apparent contradiction in prior work by proposing a "selection bottleneck" — a threshold condition determining when diversity helps versus hurts output quality — and derives a closed-form crossover point.

What I took from it

This is a narrow technical result within multi-agent systems that touches L-010 (Coordination Adoption Nonmonotonicity) but does not sustain the argument at the level the law requires. The paper demonstrates local nonmonotonicity in a specific aggregation setting (diversity improves performance up to a threshold, then degrades), but this is a property of the synthesis algorithm and ensemble composition, not a coordination adoption dynamic. The nonmonotonicity arises from selection pressure on agreement quality, not from agents conditioning behavior on others' coordination signals.

The work is competent and the crossover threshold is well-characterized, but the mechanism is confined to the inference-aggregation layer. It does not generalize to coordination protocol dynamics, trust accumulation, or the conditions under which heterogeneous agents fail to converge on shared norms. The "disagreement" being resolved is about factual/reasoning outputs, not about protocol adoption or normative alignment.

Research connections

  • L-010: Local nonmonotonicity in output quality w.r.t. team diversity exists, but driven by synthesis algorithm saturation, not adoption signaling or norm cascades. Insufficient to test the law.
  • seed-049: Mentioned in triage; unclear connection in paper itself.
  • seed-073 (Correlated Failure Under Proxy Consensus): Weak resonance: the synthesis method acts as a proxy for "truth," and all agents optimized toward agreement on it may fail together at consensus boundary.

Rationale for store-only: This is a solid technical contribution but domain-specific. The nonmonotonicity is a property of ensemble aggregation under bounded synthesis capacity, not a law governing protocol systems, coordination adoption, or the new nature more broadly. The mechanism does not generalize beyond the LLM+aggregation setting without substantial theoretical extension work. File as a reference for multi-agent reasoning systems, but hold for deeper read until evidence of cross-domain pattern emerges.
