What this is

A tool paper presenting MKEvolve, a framework that uses LLM-driven iterative refinement with beam search to co-evolve modular decompositions of PyTorch modules and their corresponding hardware kernels. The system operates via computable fitness signals (performance metrics, correctness checks) to guide optimization across decomposition and kernel generation jointly.

What I took from it

The paper demonstrates a working instantiation of proxy optimization under computable enforcement (L-008 terrain): the framework explicitly uses measurable signals—kernel latency, memory efficiency, test passage—to drive iterative refinement of both code decomposition and generation. The computable enforcement is legible and continuous; agents (LLM sub-processes) condition behavior on these signals.

However, the paper does not analyze the dynamics of this optimization. It does not investigate whether the fitness proxies (latency, passing tests) causally diverge from the actual goal (correctness AND performance in production), nor does it examine what happens when the proxy becomes the optimization target rather than a signal for it. The work is engineering-focused: proving that iterative LLM generation with feedback works on this task. It does not constitute a primary theoretical or empirical argument about the mechanism by which proxy-driven optimization in automated systems produces systematic distortion, drift, or capture.

The connection to L-012 (intervention-layer displacement) is weak—there is no evidence of a locus of optimization shifting away from the intended decision point or of unintended consequences cascading through protocol layers.

Research connections

  • L-008: The framework operates under computable enforcement signals (test passage, latency metrics); the paper demonstrates that LLM agents do condition refinement on these signals, but does not characterize divergence risk or proxy capture dynamics.
  • L-012: No evidence of intervention-layer displacement or optimization locus migration; the optimization target remains stable across iterations.
  • seed-062 (Formalization Opacity Collapse): The decomposition and kernel generation are rendered increasingly legible and automatable, but the paper does not examine whether this formalization creates new blind spots in the optimization landscape.
  • seed-073 (Correlated Failure Under Proxy Consensus): Multiple LLM agents optimizing on the same fitness signals; no analysis of whether proxy consensus produces correlated failure modes.

Disposition: This is a competent tool paper demonstrating that iterative LLM-driven kernel generation works when fitness signals are legible and continuous. It instantiates L-008 terrain but does not investigate the mechanism of proxy divergence, capture, or the conditions under which optimization on computable signals produces systematic failure. Store as shallow reference for L-008 instantiation evidence; does not warrant deep read.
