What this is

A mechanism design paper introducing "defensive rebalancing" — a protocol intervention that transfers assets between constant-function market makers (CFMMs) to eliminate arbitrage opportunities and prevent value leakage. The work proves existence of rebalancing operations that move arbitrage-prone configurations to arbitrage-free states while preserving (or improving) liquidity for all parties.

What I took from it

This is competent mechanism design work operating within the established toolbox of AMM optimization. The core insight — that you can defend against arbitrage by directly rebalancing pools rather than modifying pricing functions — is local to the CFMM domain and does not generalize to the protocol-level dynamics we track.

The paper does not engage with the deeper question: why does arbitrage asymmetry persist at all? It treats arbitrage as a solvable optimization problem rather than asking whether the defensive protocol itself generates new exploitation surfaces, or whether rebalancing mechanisms become themselves targets for strategic manipulation once legible. The mechanism is presented as neutral infrastructure, not as a new coordination point.

This is not a challenge to L-002 (Hardness Asymmetry) — if anything, it illustrates it passively: defense requires choreography across pools and state coordination; arbitrage requires only observation and a transaction. But the paper does not name or theorize this asymmetry.

Research connections

  • L-002: Rebalancing defense is computationally and informationally more complex than the arbitrage it defends against; asymmetry assumed but not explored.
  • L-008: Proxy Optimization Under Computable Enforcement — rebalancing decisions will become legible signals; once the defense mechanism is formalized, it becomes optimizable. No discussion of second-order gaming.
  • seed-080 (Proxy Collapse Under Upstream Asymmetry): The rebalancing rule itself may become a predictable signal that generates new arbitrage opportunities at a higher layer.
