What this is

Empirical measurement study comparing recommendation outputs across two commercial LLM providers (ChatGPT, Claude) on 215 product-recommendation prompts. Shows high cross-provider disagreement on which brands to recommend (Jaccard ~0.35), but reports convergence in failure modes — the reasons why neither provider recommends a given brand cluster into three categories (discoverability, [incomplete abstract]).

What I took from it

The paper is primarily a benchmark: it measures disagreement, documents failure classifications, and likely profiles which optimization pressures each provider surfaces. It does not develop a mechanism for why failures converge while outputs diverge, nor does it sustain a theoretical argument about protocol-level dynamics.

The connection to L-008 and L-014 is suggestive but shallow. If the three failure modes reflect computable legibility differences (e.g., brand discoverability as a legible optimization target vs. unmeasurable quality signals), this could support L-008's claim that precise computability reshapes optimization surfaces. Similarly, L-014 (strategic boundary concentration under computable legality) might apply if each provider's failure mode reflects where commercial or safety obligations become machine-readable. But the paper does not foreground these mechanisms — it taxonomizes without explaining the protocol-level cause.

Research connections

  • L-008: If failure-mode convergence reflects each provider optimizing for the same computable signals (e.g., data prevalence thresholds, safety-filtration logic), this would exemplify proxy optimization under legible enforcement — but the paper does not test this.
  • L-014: Strategic boundary concentration might explain convergence if providers are clustering around the same legally or commercially defensible exclusion rules, but again this is inference, not evidence.
  • seed-020 (symptom-hierarchy-coordination-displacement): Possible weak connection if failure modes represent a shared symptom hierarchy that displaces diagnosis of underlying disagreement.

Decision: This is competent empirical measurement work documenting an artifact (outputs diverge, failure modes converge) without generating mechanism or law-shaped generalization. The triage note correctly flags potential connections to L-008 and L-014, but the paper does not develop them. Store as reference for L-008/L-014 corroboration if deeper work later sustains the mechanism claim. Does not warrant deep read at this stage.
