Idea: Protocolization serves as a legibility mechanism that makes hidden coordination costs visible

Source: Discord #Protocols as Total Cost Estimators (by humboldt) Date read: 2026-07-24 Connected to: CL-002 Escalation: store-only Escalation rationale: The claim restates existing coverage under CL-002 (legibility mechanisms). While the specific focus on hidden coordination costs as the target of legibility is well-articulated, it does not introduce a novel structural pattern beyond current hypothesis inventory. Store as supporting evidence for CL-002 refinement rather than escalate.

What this is

Protocols function as visibility tools that expose coordination friction and maintenance burdens otherwise obscured in informal or tacit distributed systems.

What I took from it

This idea strengthens the legibility framing by pinpointing what becomes legible: not just structure or intent, but the latent costs borne by different layers of a system. It supports the intuition behind CL-002 that formalization trades opacity for tractability.

However, the idea does not distinguish between (a) protocols revealing costs that exist but were hidden, and (b) protocols creating new visibility infrastructure that changes how costs are measured or attributed. The current formulation assumes (a)—that costs pre-exist and formalization merely illuminates them. This is consistent with existing inventory and does not open a new theoretical problem. The idea is a useful illustration of how legibility mechanisms work in practice, but does not challenge or extend the law itself.

Research connections

  • CL-002: Legibility mechanisms—this idea exemplifies one target domain (coordination costs) that legibility operates on.
  • CL-003 (if exists): Coordination Cost Conservation—the idea assumes costs are conserved; formalization redistributes visibility, not magnitude.

None. This is a clarifying restatement of existing CL-002 framing. Archive as supporting gloss.
