Idea: Protocol value exhibits local emergence without global conservation—analogous to entropy locally decreasing while globally increasing

Escalation: store-only
Escalation rationale: The idea proposes a conserved quantity (optionality) rather than promoting a new mechanism. It refines rather than ruptures the current hypothesis space. Warrants storage and continued empirical grounding before escalation to candidate law.

What this is

The claim proposes that protocol value can locally increase or vanish without global conservation, but that a deeper conserved quantity—optionality (or choice space)—monotonically decreases globally, offering a thermodynamic analogue for protocol system behavior.

What I took from it

This idea productively reframes the question from "does protocol opinion decay to zero?" (binary) to "what quantity is conserved while value circulates locally?" It accepts local emergence and heterogeneity while positing a global directional constraint, which aligns well with CL-002's intuition about coordination costs but inverts the target: rather than tracking what costs accumulate, it tracks what freedom depletes.

The entropy analogy is intuitive but underdeveloped. Local value emergence (nodes gaining consensus or utility) while global optionality shrinks (design space, reversibility, or fork-ability constrains) is coherent—but requires clarification: Is optionality a measure of protocol degrees of freedom? State space size? Network cardinality of viable forks? The analogy gains force only when optionality is operationalized in a protocol-native way, not borrowed wholesale from thermodynamics.

This also opens a useful tension: if value and optionality decouple, then success metrics for protocols may systematically diverge—a thriving protocol (high local value) can be a shrinking one (low optionality).

Candidate laws or signals

HYP-PROTO-OPTIONALITY-001: In protocolized systems, the sum of accessible alternative states (optionality) exhibits monotonic global decrease as coordination and consensus embed themselves, even as localized value or utility increases. Optionality depletion is the entropic signature of protocol maturation.

Status: Candidate hypothesis. Requires: (a) formal definition of optionality in protocol terms (degrees of freedom, fork-ability metrics, or state-space cardinality), (b) empirical trace across protocol lifecycles (Bitcoin, Ethereum, DNS), (c) validation that optionality decrease is monotonic or near-monotonic.
