Idea: Protocol theory could adopt an ethnomethodological approach where the phenomenon

What this is

A proposal to invert the direction of theorization in protocol research: rather than imposing categorical frameworks (pure vs. dirty, explore vs. exploit) onto systems, allow coordination laws to surface through observation of how protocolized systems reflexively organize their own patterns.

What I took from it

This challenges a foundational assumption in current research: that we must precede observation with axioms. Instead, it suggests treating protocol systems as inherently theorizing entities—their behavior constitutes an implicit classification system that we should recover rather than impose.

This opens a genuine methodological gap. Most protocol analysis has assumed we bring the law-finding apparatus; this idea inverts it. It doesn't contradict the pure/dirty dichotomy or explore/exploit framing yet—it's orthogonal. But it suggests those dichotomies may be our artifacts, not invariants in the phenomenon. The risk: ethnomethodological approaches can produce thick description without producing generalizable laws. The promise: if coordination laws do emerge from self-theorizing phenomena, they would be more robust than top-down impositions.

Research connections

  • (hypothetical future law on protocol self-organization): if systems exhibit reflexive pattern-recovery, we'd need a law describing how protocols bootstrap their own classification systems.

Candidate laws or signals

CL-002-Ethnomethodological: Protocol systems may exhibit coordination-organizing behavior that precedes and constrains the theoretical frameworks observers impose; laws derived from systems' own reflexive organization may be more invariant than categories imported from external theory.

Store-only status justified: This is a methodological claim, not yet an empirical law. Promote to active hypothesis only when a specific protocol domain (e.g., consensus mechanisms, trading algos, moderation systems) demonstrates self-theorizing that recovers a distinct pattern.
