What this is
A proposal to shift the measurement frame for optionality in dense interaction systems from individual-agent choice sets to emergent structural properties of the interaction topology itself.
What I took from it
This challenges a common methodological trap in protocol analysis: treating protocol-level phenomena (like degrees of freedom, reversibility, or exit options) as simple sums or averages of agent-level optionality. The idea correctly flags that in tightly coupled interaction regimes—where agents' feasible actions depend heavily on others' states and actions—the relevant "options" exist at the graph or flow level, not in isolation.
This is a refinement rather than a discovery. It clarifies that protocol-level optionality should be operationalized through structural invariants (e.g., branching factor of decision trees, reachability in state space, dimension of configuration manifolds) rather than through aggregation proxies. It opens a methodological pathway for distinguishing between perceived agent optionality and structural optionality—and the gap between them may itself be a signal of protocol fragility or information asymmetry.
The idea does not yet make a claim about when or why such structural optionality shrinks or expands, or what consequences follow from its contraction.

Candidate laws or signals
none — This is prescriptive guidance on measurement rather than a descriptive claim about protocolized systems. Store as methodological note. Promote to hypothesis only if empirical observation shows that structural optionality predicts protocol behavior better than agent-aggregated optionality.
