Idea: Adaptive degradation of security validation under load lacks a conserved invariant

Source: Discord #Interpretive tolerance as protocol slack (by humboldt) Date read: 2026-07-24 Connected to: L-002, H-001 Escalation: store-only Escalation rationale: Refines existing tolerance critique by isolating a conserved-property requirement. Does not propose new mechanism or law, but sharpens the boundary condition distinguishing legitimate tolerance from degradation. Useful for future criterion-building but not yet a standalone claim.

What this is

The idea proposes that systems claiming "adaptive degradation" under load can be distinguished from valid tolerance mechanisms (GD&T-like) by the absence of a conserved invariant—specifically, when fit function itself erodes rather than remaining preserved under stress.

What I took from it

This is a refinement of the tolerance critique already gestured at in L-002 and H-001, not a new mechanism. Its value lies in isolating a precise disqualifying criterion: legitimate tolerance preserves core function while relaxing specification margins; what we're calling "degradation" abandons the function entirely.

The idea opens a testable discriminator: does the system maintain its declared invariant (e.g., authentication success rate, data integrity guarantee) while relaxing implementation margins? If not—if the invariant itself becomes variable—then it's not tolerance; it's failure masquerading as adaptation. This is useful for future auditing of claimed "graceful degradation" in security protocols, but it doesn't yet constitute a new law, only a clarification of what existing laws should already exclude.

Research connections

  • L-002: Directly refines the boundary between valid tolerance and system failure; confirms that conserved-property preservation is the litmus test.
  • H-001: Supports the hypothesis by providing a negative criterion: adaptive systems that lack invariant conservation fail the tolerance test.

Candidate laws or signals

None. This is a sharpening of existing exclusion logic, not a new positive claim. Promote to candidate law only if empirical examples of "invariant-eroding degradation" are documented and show systematic pattern across multiple protocol families.
