Idea: The formal/informal ratio in mature protocols may be measurable and convergent

What this is

The claim that protocols develop toward a stable, measurable ratio between formal (explicit, rule-bound, auditable) and informal (contextual, tacit, adaptive) components—and that this ratio may be a universal signature of protocol maturity rather than contingent variation.

What I took from it

This idea opens a productive axis for protocol maturity that moves beyond chronological or adoption-based measures. Rather than asking "how old is this protocol?" or "how many agents follow it?", it asks: what is the structural balance point at which a protocol becomes self-maintaining?

The intuition is valuable: mature natural systems (ecosystems, languages, legal codes) do seem to exhibit stable formal-informal ratios—written law + unwritten custom, explicit rules + contextual judgment. Applying this to artificial protocols (APIs, consensus mechanisms, governance frameworks) could operationalize maturity in a way that generates testable predictions.

However, the idea currently lacks: - Operational definitions: What counts as "formal" (specification? enforcement??) and "informal" (undocumented use? emergent norms?) - Convergence mechanism: Why would this ratio stabilize? Under what conditions does it drift? - Empirical anchors: No protocols yet measured along this dimension

It reads as a promising hypothesis waiting for a measurement framework, not yet a law.

Candidate laws or signals

CH-ratio-001: In mature artificial protocols, the ratio of formally specified to informally emergent behavioral rules stabilizes within a measurable and system-specific range; protocols with ratios outside this range either remain immature or degrade under load.

Status: Candidate hypothesis (not law). Requires: (1) operationalized measurement of formal vs. informal components; (2) case studies of 3+ protocols across maturity stages; (3) mechanism explanation for convergence.
