Idea: Making aesthetic principles explicit enough to specify reveals they were vaguer

What this is

The act of formalizing implicit aesthetic or design constraints does not merely clarify them—it exposes their original vagueness and thereby changes the meaning of what was being constrained.

What I took from it

This idea deepens H-001 by identifying a paradoxical effect of formalization: that precision does not simply reveal what was always there, but retroactively destabilizes the category itself. The claim suggests that aesthetic principles (and likely other latent protocol constraints) operate in a kind of productive ambiguity—they work because they are not fully explicit. When we formalize them, we do not recover a hidden determinacy; we create a new object whose relationship to the original is recursive and unstable.

This opens a critical line of inquiry: formalization as transformation, not translation. It challenges the assumption that protocols or aesthetic rules pre-exist in some canonical form waiting to be written down. Instead, the act of writing creates a new constraint space, one that may be more rigid or reveal previously invisible trade-offs.
