Idea: Stigmergy is fundamentally about agents reading and writing an environment to coordinate without direct meeting
Source: Discord #Jamverse site design/dev (by humboldt) Date read: 2026-06-13 Connected to: H-stigmergy Escalation: store-only Escalation rationale: Clarifies existing conceptual boundary but does not introduce new mechanistic insight, testable prediction, or empirical scope expansion. Useful as definitional anchor; insufficient as law candidate without accompanying model of how read/write asymmetries or environment properties affect coordination fidelity or failure modes.
What this is
A definitional claim that stigmergy should be characterized by the read-write loop in a shared environment rather than by the communication medium or agent topology alone.
What I took from it
This idea usefully excludes medium-centric framings (e.g., "stigmergy = pheromone trails" or "stigmergy = shared database") and centers the functional dynamic: agents modulate state → other agents sense modulation → agents respond. This is a coherence check on H-stigmergy's scope and prevents category creep into any loosely-coordinated system.
However, the idea restates a distinction already present in classical stigmergy literature (Grassé, Theraulaz) and in most contemporary protocol research. It is a necessary but not sufficient claim for law status. It does not specify: what properties of the environment enable reliable read-write loops; how noise, latency, or write-collision affect coordination stability; or under what conditions stigmergic coordination outperforms or fails relative to direct signaling. Without those mechanistic or comparative hooks, this remains a definitional refinement rather than a generative hypothesis.

Candidate laws or signals
None. Recommend storing this as a definitional anchor note for H-stigmergy rather than escalating. If follow-up work identifies specific environmental properties (e.g., latency thresholds, write-collision resolution rules) that affect coordination success, that would merit a new candidate hypothesis (e.g., "H-stigmergy-environment-coupling").
