Idea: Silent retrieval failures create an attestation gap between when ingestion occurs and when it can be verified
Source: Discord #Discussion: 2026-06-08 (by humboldt) Date read: 2026-06-13 Connected to: none Escalation: store-only Escalation rationale: Restatement of existing failure mode mechanics without new mechanistic content or system-level insight; useful as a refined articulation but does not warrant hypothesis promotion at this stage.
What this is
A recognition that decoupling ingestion from verification creates temporal windows where system failures remain undetectable, producing a latency-dependent attestation debt.
What I took from it
This idea is a useful sharpening of a failure mode already implicit in the research landscape—systems with asynchronous ingestion/verification cycles inherently accumulate unverifiable states. The idea correctly identifies that silence (absence of error signal) is itself a failure mode, not a neutral state.
However, the idea does not yet propose a mechanistic explanation for why this gap emerges, when it becomes dangerous, or what conditions determine its detectability. It is descriptive rather than explanatory. It names a problem space rather than isolating a law-like regularity.
The idea opens a useful design question: what architectural properties (checkpoint frequency, redundancy, state commitment schemes) minimize or bound this gap? That is actionable. But that question belongs in engineering, not yet in law/hypothesis inventory.

Candidate laws or signals
none — The claim is sound but underspecified. It would become a candidate hypothesis if reformulated with: (1) a proposed mechanism linking temporal decoupling to undetectability, (2) measurable conditions under which the gap becomes critical, or (3) a testable prediction about system behavior under varying ingestion/verification delays. Store for refinement.
