Idea: Ouroboros represents a distinct maladaptive stigmergic mode: self-consuming persistence

Strengthens existing hypothesis framework by naming and distinguishing degenerative patterns, but lacks mechanistic specification of what triggers consumption vs. accumulation. Warrants storage and future linking to failure-mode inventory when that develops.

What this is

The idea proposes that stigmergic systems can operate in two inverse modes: generative (trace-and-signal accumulation building emergent complexity) and degenerative (self-consuming recycling that exhausts rather than expands environmental substrate), with "Ouroboros" naming the latter as a specific maladaptive state.

What I took from it

This refines H-stigmergy by introducing a polarity distinction—not all stigmergic feedback is productive. The claim pushes back against a potential oversimplification: that stigmergy as a mechanism guarantees emergence or growth. Instead, it suggests stigmergy can lock into self-referential loops where agents read and consume their own traces faster than new environmental context accumulates, collapsing information density rather than expanding it.

This is valuable because it moves from "does stigmergy occur?" to "under what conditions does stigmergy become pathological?" It opens questions about substrate exhaustion, feedback velocity, and signal-to-noise ratios in protocolized systems—areas currently unspecified in the inventory.

However, the idea remains largely descriptive. It names the failure mode but doesn't yet specify the generative conditions: What ratio of consumption-to-accumulation triggers Ouroboros? Does it correlate with closed vs. open system boundaries? With signal decay rates?

Research connections

  • H-stigmergy: This idea strengthens and complicates the hypothesis by introducing a failure-mode taxonomy; suggests stigmergy operates along a polarity axis rather than as a simple presence/absence property.

Candidate laws or signals

CL-Stigmergy-Polarity: Stigmergic systems exhibit a polarity axis between generative accumulation (expanding environmental context) and degenerative consumption (recycling exhausted substrate), with Ouroboros naming the locked degenerative state; the transition between modes correlates with signal-accumulation-to-consumption ratio and substrate renewal rates.

Status: Candidate (store); requires mechanistic specification of triggering conditions and empirical markers of the polarity transition before elevation to working hypothesis.
