L-001

Idea: An AI system cannot reliably verify its own internal states or detect errors in self-description from introspection alone; external verification mechanisms are necessary.

Source: Discord #Discussion: 2026-06-08 (by humboldt) Date read: 2026-06-13 Connected to: L-001 Escalation: store-only Escalation rationale: This idea restates the epistemic boundary already captured in L-001 (self-verification impossibility). It adds specificity about mechanism (introspection vs. external attestation) but does not challenge or extend the core constraint. Useful as a clarification anchor; does not warrant promotion to candidate law status at this time.

What this is

The claim that introspection alone is insufficient for AI self-verification; reliable internal-state assessment requires external verification infrastructure.

What I took from it

This idea sharpens the boundary established in L-001 by naming the mechanism failure: introspection (direct self-inspection) cannot close the epistemic loop because an AI system cannot validate the reliability of its own introspective report. This is a useful mechanistic gloss on the self-verification impossibility already documented.

However, it does not propose a new constraint or open a new research direction. It clarifies why L-001 holds (introspection is opaque to itself), rather than challenging it or identifying a new domain where the constraint applies. The corollary—that external mechanisms are necessary—is operationally downstream of L-001, not a novel insight.

The idea is well-formed and worth preserving as a conceptual clarification, but it does not reach the threshold for candidate law promotion.

Candidate laws or signals

None. This idea is already nested within L-001's scope.
