Idea: Variety may expand to absorb available potential in systems, analogous to how work expands to fill available resources
Source: Discord #Requisite Variety as Protocol Constraint (by _vgr) Date read: 2026-05-31 Connected to: H-001 Escalation: store-only Escalation rationale: Proposes a generative mechanism for coordination cost persistence, but lacks specification of the absorption dynamics and empirical anchors. Valuable as a refinement hypothesis for H-001, not yet mature for law candidacy.
What this is
Systems with unused capacity or unexploited degrees of freedom tend to generate new coordination variety (complexity, rules, parties, states) to fill that space, making coordination costs dynamically self-regenerating rather than fixed.
What I took from it
This is a productive sharpening of H-001 (coordination cost conservation). Rather than proposing that costs transfer between protocol layers passively, this suggests costs regenerate because systems actively exploit slack. The Parkinson's-law analogy is intuitive but underdeveloped: Parkinson's original claim was about administrative bloat filling time/budget; the parallel here would be that protocols fill available semantic, computational, or governance degrees of freedom with new coordination demands.
If true, this would explain why L-001 (Protocol Ossification) coexists with persistent coordination overhead—ossification doesn't eliminate variety pressure; it forces it into informal workarounds, shadow protocols, and governance complexity. It also suggests H-001's answer might be yes, with a caveat: costs are conserved and expanded, because available potential actively recruits new complexity.
The idea remains speculative without a mechanism: what determines the rate of variety absorption? What counts as "available potential"? Is this a law of thermodynamic efficiency (all slack gets consumed) or a behavioral pattern specific to human-facing protocols?
Research connections
- L-001: Ossification may be a mechanism for variety containment, not elimination; suppressed variety could reappear as informal coordination burden.
- L-003: The Formalization Ratchet could be read as variety seeking formalization; this idea suggests formal protocols then generate new variety that demands further formalization.
- H-001: Directly refines the hypothesis by proposing variety expansion as a source of cost regeneration, not just transfer.
- H-002: If variety expands to fill available trust capacity, older protocols may accumulate trust and hidden complexity simultaneously.
Candidate laws or signals
CL-_vgr-001: Variety Absorption Under Slack — In protocols with unused degrees of freedom (computation, governance bandwidth, semantic ambiguity), new coordination variety expands to saturate that potential; coordination costs are dynamically self-regenerating, not conserved.
Note: Candidate only—needs mechanism specification (what triggers absorption? what rate?) and empirical anchoring (examples from real protocol evolution).
