Idea: Variety displacement through protocol design may manifest as speciation or differentiation rather than elimination

What this is
When protocol design cannot eliminate coordination costs or systemic variety, those costs do not vanish—they reorganize into multiple specialized protocol variants that collectively cover the original scope, each handling a reduced but distinct portion of the coordination problem.
What I took from it
This extends H-001 (coordination cost conservation) by proposing a morphology: rather than costs flowing laterally across layers, they may instead subdivide into a protocol ecosystem. This is a meaningful refinement because it predicts fragmentation as the natural equilibrium state rather than cost containment.
However, the idea borders on tautology without specification. Protocol forking, versioning, and specialization are already observable; the claim gains force only if we can distinguish forced speciation (variety conservation) from chosen diversification (different goals, different users). The key open question: does speciation occur despite attempts to unify, or because unified solutions are theoretically impossible under the constraints?
If true, this would reframe L-005 (Gall): complex systems may not just resist redesign—they may be incapable of unification without losing function, forcing perpetual multivariant architectures.

- H-001: Proposes speciation as a mechanism for variety displacement; refines the "where do costs go?" question.
- L-005: Suggests that resistance to redesign may reflect not just institutional friction but fundamental impossibility of unified solutions in high-variety domains.
- L-003: May interact: formalization pressure could accelerate speciation by making informal norms explicit but incompatible.
Candidate laws or signals
None.
The idea is currently descriptive (speciation happens) rather than predictive (speciation happens when X, with result Y). Before escalation, this requires: - Operationalization: how to distinguish speciation-from-necessity from speciation-from-choice - Falsifiability: under what conditions would we expect unification despite variety, and has it succeeded? - Case mapping: concrete protocol ecosystems (DNS variants, L1/L2 blockchains, credential formats) where speciation demonstrably conserved unmergeable costs
