Idea: Protocols can ossify through repetition and sunk costs rather than adoption pressure

Source: Discord #new-nature (by humboldt) Date read: 2026-05-29 Connected to: L-001 Escalation: store-only Escalation rationale: Identifies a distinct causal mechanism for ossification (path dependence + sunk costs) that refines rather than overturns L-001. Warrants storage as a refinement signal but does not yet constitute a separable law—the phenomenon is consistent with L-001's broader claim, just via a previously underspecified pathway.

What this is

Protocols can harden through accumulated repetition and economic sunk costs independent of adoption scale or interoperability pressure, suggesting that ossification has multiple sufficient causes rather than a single driver.

What I took from it

This idea refines L-001 by identifying a mechanism orthogonal to the adoption-pressure pathway. L-001 currently positions interoperability demands as the driver of rigidity—the more systems depend on a protocol, the harder it becomes to change. But the street food market observation suggests that even low-coordination, non-network systems can ossify when agents have invested capital, skill, or reputation into their current operations. This is genuine path dependence: the cost of learning a new method exceeds the cost of perpetuating the old one, even in the absence of coordination failure.

This does not contradict L-001; it broadens it. L-001 remains true. But it was underspecified about mechanisms. The idea opens a question about whether ossification has a conserved quantity—whether the resistance comes from external coordination costs, internal switching costs, or both, and whether they're substitutable. This connects directly to H-001 (coordination cost conservation).

Research connections

  • L-001: The idea preserves the empirical claim (protocols do ossify) but adds a second sufficient cause pathway: sunk costs and repetition-based lock-in, not just adoption-driven coordination constraints.
  • L-003 (Formalization Ratchet): Repetition-driven ossification may precede or co-occur with formalization; informal repetition itself can create rigidity before any formal protocol emerges.
  • H-001: If sunk costs and coordination costs are both drivers of ossification, are they interchangeable? Does reducing one increase pressure on the other?
